25 Things Geeks Can Do To Go Green

Home Page

21. Read E-Flyers Instead of Paper Flyers: Retail establishments depend of the flyers they send out to bring customers to their doors. A lot of paper is used to produced to print all those flyers on, many of those with an environmental conscience put up a no flyers please sign on their mail boxes. It maybe admirable to not take flyers as a way to prevent waste however not seeing the sales advertised in flyers means potentially losing out on some great deals offered by retail establishments. Most of the large retailers make their flyers available to be read online. For voracious flyer readers especially those who read the flyers from large electronics stores, not missing out on sales while saying no thank you to paper flyers makes the time reading online e-flyers time well spent.

22. Take A Reusable Cup To Your Favorite Coffee House: Coffee and other caffinated beverages have a large role in geek culture. From the large chains like Starbucks and Second Cup to independent coffee houses serve their cups of hot liquid goodness in cardboard and some still use Styrofoam cups. Even when served for consumption at the establishment cardboard cups never get recycled and just become waste. As an incentive to promote people to bring reusable coffee cups many coffee houses will give discounts or some other rewards like a double punch on a frequent customer card.

23. Read your newspapers and magazines online instead of on paper: Most newspapers and many magazines now offer a digital version of their publications as digital versions that can be read online. Reading online newspapers and magazines version cuts down on the number of trees that have to be cut down to publish the printed versions. Reducing 100 pounds of paper usage saves one tree. Switching to online newspapers and magazines every household will save at least one tree every year.

24. Plug your devices into a solar charger: Portable devices powered by rechargeable batteries are never further than arms' reach these days. Cell phones, eBook readers, iPods and other MP3 players rely on plug in chargers which constantly suck power even if the devices are not being charged. An accessory sure to become popular with users of these devices in the near future are chargers that instead instead of pulling power from an outlet on a wall or in a vehicle, is powered by the sun or any kind of artificial light. Solar chargers have their own batteries that charged by the solar panel and then the devices are then charged by the batteries in the solar charger. The other advantage of having a solar charger is not having to find an outlet to charge a dying cell phone, music player or e-book reader.  Solar chargers make excellent gifts for Christmas, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Presidents' day, Captain Kirk's Birthday, Captain Picard's Birthday, IT Professionals Day (Ok I made that one up because every geek should have their own day), just to help make relatives and friends to be more environmentally friendly.

25. Don't Just Recycle Your old tech buy some recycled Tech too: Recycling your tech toys that are past their expiry date isn't the only way to make a difference where it comes to the environment. Post consumer waste from technology recycling is making it's way into brand new gadgets as well. Motorola's Renew cell phone available on GSM cellular carriers has plastic parts made from post consumer recycled waste. As well as having recycled plastic parts Motorola buys carbon offsets to make the Renew the world's first zero carbon footprint cell phone. Motorola isn't the only handset maker that has a claim to have the world's greenest cell phone. Samsung's CDMA based model called the Reclaim has an outer housing made from corn based bio-plastic. Samsung has banished the toxic metals such as Lead, Mercury, and Cadmium from the Reclaim. While these two phones are just a small start towards greener technology products, they are most likely the start of a bigger trend that will get big in the next couple of years.
